1996 cruise control and the OD light on the read out.

Postby omegarecs » Sat Mar 30, 2013 10:57 pm

Ok when I bought this bike the owner at the time stated that the cruise control worked. I get the bike home and take it for a ride after I replaced the Timing belts and the cruise does not work. So i read the manual and its states that the bike needs to be in OD or 5th gear and the OD light will come on when you put it in 5th. It does not come on. So I dont know if the light on the dash has to show OD before the cruise works. When you push in the (sticky) button the two cruise lights on the right lower side of the led readout do not come on either. Also another question can you just replace the head light dimmer switch or do you have to buy the whole left side control? Thanks for all your help.

Cruise control will work in 4th gear...just have to be above 25mph. There may be other factors causing the cruise to not work... blown fuse, stuck micro switch, bad speed sensor. The cruise on/off must be depressed for it to be on (just stating the obvious), cruise light should come on. Then be in 4th or OD and press the set..set light should come on.

Their is nothing no light. I don't understand why it does not work it can't be the bulbs. That's crazy. I am going to the dealer's in the am I will keep you informed.

No...the bulbs being out would stop the cruise from working....good luck!

Ok so I went to the dealer this morning and he stated that it is probably the switch. He stated that the cruise on light should come on when you push the cruise switch to on. and it does not. Then when you are going in 4th and set it the cruise set light comes on and stays on until you break or manually shut it off. does this sound right??

That is correct. on my 96' I can be in 4th or OD and set my cruise..then break with either pulling the hand brake, pulling the clutch, pressing the foot brake or rotating my throttle fully forward (de-accelerating)...

Also be aware of a brass bushing on the clutch lever that can cause issues....

Item #2 on the drawing

IF it is worn, it will not allow your clutch lever to release the micro switch and allow the cruise control to activate
