Alternator 1998 se

Postby preszlak » Mon Apr 01, 2013 2:49 pm

Hi just came back off a road trip my alternator crapped out on the trip I am at home now in alberta and looking to see what steps I need to take to remove the alternator, I have the 3 bolts out that attach it to the housing but looks to be more to it than that. Is there a step by step procedure that anyone can offer. Dave :?:

Mine is a 88.I removed mine for a check up before the riding season.
I unhooked the battery first and then rotated the alternator to get the wiring off.
It took a bit of persuasion to get it freed up and rotated out.
Tap,tap,pry,tap tap.

Just wiggling about did it.
I found mine just needed a new set of brushes. The bearings and coupling rubber blocks were OK.

Go to the "How-To Articles", and type in "Alternator Brushes" in the Search box. You will see a number of hints, and helps for what you are trying to achieve. The How-To is a good place to look, and if you dont find what you are looking for, then go and do a Search.

Don't forget to purchase the 4 rubber alternator dampeners.
Part # 13534-MN5-020 x 4 Take note of how they are installed, as you remove the old ones.
The ones in there will be hardened and they need to be somewhat pliable, or they can fall apart/be noisy after you re-install the alternator.
