Postby rrruuunnn » Mon Apr 08, 2013 2:42 pm

The neutral light works fine when the engine is cold, but when at operating temp the light will not come on. After the engine cool down it works fine, this just started this weekend. any ideas?

My thoughts are going towards the gear position switch and thermal breakdown, similar to the pulse generators when they go bad.

If it's any help...
My 88 will light up the neutral lamp IF I switch from 1st gear up....but not from 2nd down..
I removed the front cover(it's inside the engine)...disassembled the ***non-serviceable****switch and resurfaced the contacts...
It worked for a while but now is the same way....I suspect the wiper contact or coupler bar is worn.
I might replace it one day if it completely quits, but for now If the light is out,I pull the clutch lever to crank it.

So far the other contacts are OK as my cruise and OD lamp still work....

OK, I found the problem to be the contacts to the reverse lever switch, cleaned the switch and light working normal now

Good find.I forgot about that switch too.
Kind of unusual about being temp sensitive but good info.
