Upgraded Transmission in 1500 SE

Postby trj827 » Mon Apr 08, 2013 4:52 pm

Which year did Honda start putting the Valkyrie transmissions in the Goldwing. I thought they started in 1998 but have since been told it could have been 1997 ( mind you he was trying to sell me his bike ) that had the better trans.

How is the Valkyrie trans different (and thus better)? I haven't seen any info on this before.

Is there a way to change fifth gear on a 1500 so the motor rpm would be around 2500 at 75mph? That would up the mpg on a 1500 greatly.

No it won't! That is a myth borne out by my own real world experience

Along with the stock size rear bike tire, I have used different sized CTs on the rear of my bike, with a net difference of 500 RPM @ 60mph and fuel mileage remained almost identical to stock.
It's the massive frontal area on the 1500 that creates so much drag and the power (fuel) needed to push it through the air (drag) which rises with the speed increase.
Keeping it under 60 mph will see you with the best combination of fuel mileage and road speed.
With a Federal Fomoza 175/60-16, my RPMs @ 60 mph were roughly 3,000
With an Elite 3 160/80-16 there were 2,750
With my present Austone 175R-16, the RPMs are 2,500.

Even though there was a fair amount of RPM differences between the 3 at a given speed, they all returned the same fuel mileage!

When loaded down for Moto Camping touring, I average 38 MPG US.

I don't travel much on the Interstates as I prefer to explore the 2 lane roads, but I don't 'baby' it either, as I'm a mildly aggressive rider.

Ha ... I wasn't even pushing it, just riding 'mildly aggressive' . ;)

That's with the Austone 175R-16 car tire on the rear, which increases the bike's ride height 3/4" and drops the RPMs by 250.
