Running Lights

Postby toanogreen » Mon Apr 22, 2013 2:58 pm

I have a 99 SE and it has the standard lower running lights. On a previous Wing I owned the running lights were also used as cornering lights when the signal lights came on. I really liked that setup and want it on this bike. I also have a buddy that has the cornering feature only, that wants the running feature combo. I know my bulbs have two filaments (I bought them myself). Any help or suggestions.

Thanks

My 88 was the opposite...it HAD cornering lamps but no marker lamp.Neither worked.
I did find that both relays were bad so I just replaced them and added the necessary wire to the "park" filament.
The relay is small and hard to find..mine was taped to the harness just below the upper faring just up from the horns...They are small...maybe 1"x1/2"X1/2".
I used a standard 12 volt automotive relay with 5 contact blades....2 wires are ignition hot...one for the coil and the other is common switch...Attach the "park" lamp to the normally open contact as the relay is energized as soon as the bike is running. The cornering lamp is lit by the relay being turned off.

At least on mine....It operated backward of what I'd expect.De-energize a relay to turn on a light...now who thought that one up. :?:

The circuitry (and relays) to turn the lower running lights on and off with the turn signal doesn't exist on your bike - it was removed when they removed that feature from the bike in favor of always-on running lights.

The bulbs that fit in there do in fact have dual filaments, and two contacts on the base, but if you look closely, you'll see there's only one wire running to them, so only one filament is ever used.

When did "they" do away with the cornering light feature. :?: I like it on my 88. :)

I had an '89 and it had it. I wish they had kept well enough alone.

1997 was the last year. 1998 and later had them on all the time.

OK, on my 1993 GL 1500 Trike, my running lights are actually cornering lights, How can I make
them always on running lights and possibly with brighter bulbs. I am getting OLD and need
more light on the road at night.

It's a pretty simple modification. Have a look here: cornering to driving lamps
