Final Drive oil change

Postby kajunmisfitt » Wed Apr 24, 2013 11:05 am

Good Morning Everyone, I hope ya'll are doing well. I have a problem, ;ast week I got on this 1988 GL1500 GW and had a very strong smell of gasoline. On top of other thing that was going on, So my son and I decided to go look to see where it was coming from, well afte it was all said and done the right and top luggage boxes are off and the seat to the fairing is aoart. All that said I g looking and never founded the gas leak But I did check the final drive oillevel and to see if it was burning. it had a silver film to it ( I now this is not good) so we changed it and got this bike back together and NOW I have a oil leak that has developed on the rea end. I took thedrain plug off and retightened it and the fill plug I also took off and leveled to be full. I cleaned everything up and I still have a LEAK it is coming out of the middle of the final drive casing. I think I am more afraid of riding it and burning something up b/c of it is out of oil. NOT GOOD !!! THANKS AGAIN FOR THE ADVISE !!!

Part one...gas smell...The most common thing is a leak in the fuel cutoff valve..It's just in front of the gas cap..There is a weep hole in the bottom of it.My88 had a pinhole in the diaphragm.

Part two...As far as the rear end...post a picture of where you have the leak...There is a service manual avaiable on this site....Download the Euro one for the 88-89....

By the way...there have been many who have triked their 1500..Sooooo there should be complete assemblies out there. It could be cheaper than repairs of yours.

I am hoping it isn't as seriuos as I am making it out to be. it rides great put 6 new plugs in it and WOW like night and day!!!! be back soon thansk again !!!it is good to hear from a Home Boy,, I am from Lake Charles born and raised in Sulphur. take care !!!

Ditto on the timing belts, did mine this spring with the help of the How-To's on this site.

Lived in Poky for 6 years back in the 80's...good place to be from. :D We're passing through there this weekend to visit a friend. Good luck on getting that leak resolved.
