starter noise / reverse

Postby bigjimbo1957 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 7:17 am

Hello All! New to this forum and new owner of a 1990 GL 1500 SE with 76,000 miles. My problem is when engine is running it sounds like starter is trying to engage. Additionally when put in reverse the bike only moves a foot then repress button it moves another foot. I tried adjusting the reverse cables but no difference. Above 2,000 rpms noise goes away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost sounds like a roller has broken in the starter.

Is that a roller in the starter? or a roller in the starter clutch?

The starter assembly has planetary gears that drive another gear assembly. Your symptoms make it sound like one of the gears has jammed when you are reversing. Only allowing the gears to make one revolution. What ever is stopping the gears could also be preventing the starter gears from disengaging, causing the sound you hear after the enging is running. Could be something lodged in the teeth or a crack in one of the gears. You'll know after you remove the starter assembly. Now the bad news. Honda lists the entire assembly and the gear assembly but not just the gears. Go figure! Either way they are expensive. Here is a link with a diagram so you know what to look for and expect. Good luck.

Thank you for the info. I already ordered a starter due in 5/2. I'm praying for all good news because I'd rather replace the starter than have to drop the motor. ;) I'll let you know how I make out. Again my thanks!

replaced the starter this weekend no difference and adjusted the reverse cables no difference. I did notice one thing tho'... When on the center stand and shifting through the gears with the motor running the noise goes away in 4th and 5th gear. Additionally the reverse only works for a second then you have to let go of the stater button and press it again. Any help would be greatly appreicated, I'm more familiar with 1100's and this is my first 1500.

I've got the reverse problem solved. The noise issue is still ongoing. I've determined the sound is not coming from the starter. It sounds like something in hitting the inside of the rear engine case. It only happens when the bike is idling or there is no load on whatever is causing the problem. Under load in 1st 2nd and 3rd there is no problem. In 4th and 5th gear there is no sound. Anybody want to throw their .02 in?? I'm starting to think I'll have to remove the motor and the rear case to find my answer.

A long shot but could be alternator related. Listen with a stethoscope in that area. If need be engine can be run with alternator and drive rubbers (3 pair) removed temporarily.
