My friend, it probably won't be cheap...here's a good guess at your issue, and the fix:

As a newbie Winger (purchased a '90 GL1500 last August), I found the reply by gareva 1 both very informative and disconcerting. About 3 weeks ago I noticed the same gravelly sound as I downshifted through the lower three gears. Since I am a newbie, I am exploring 2 of the three options gareva 1 stated, I'm hoping that someone could provide me some helpful information:
1) What year motors are interchangeable with the 1990 GL1500?
2) Since I've never had to take this bike to a shop, can anyone suggest a good mechanic in the Portland, Oregon area? I live on the northern Oregon coast, and the valleys just a short cruise away.
Thanks,
TLH

You may fair out better making a new post with those questions, with a subject of "which 1500 motors are interchangeable" or something to that effect...

Its also important to mention that if you are going to buy a new engine, make sure that it matches the type you have---some 1500 engines had reverse, some didn't, and you need to buy an engine that matches what you currently have.

Here's one for around 700 after shipping...of course you need to find out if the electricals in your bike will power it and if its the type of motor you need...which is why I'd start a new post.
