1997 gl1500 SE alternator noise??

Postby MDRanger » Thu May 16, 2013 5:48 pm

Hello all,
I have enjoyed riding, riding, riding! Thanks for helping me get the bike just about perfect.
I still have this little noise which I assumed was timing belt whine after I changed them. But after checking them again for correct tension, and now after 3500 miles, I am remembering another post I read somewhere regarding alternator whine. I have had NO problems with alternator or battery. But I rode with a large group recently and heard the whine amplified in my helmet speakers, especially with CB radio on. Now I am thinking that I would not hear a timing belt whine amplified in the helmet speakers, but I might hear something electrical. Right?????? Comments very appreciated......... :)

Thanks, MD.

Yup,you got it.see if there is a filter capacitor attached to the alternator.usually 3/4" round and 1-1/2" long with one wire on it.
It is added to reduce alternator electrical whine.

If you happen to have the intercom on you will pick up amplified mechanical noises through the mike into the headsets. Just a thought but easy to check.

thanks all. I am hearing it with CB routed to helmet speakers and not external.Wing runs perfect so not a big deal yet. I just want to know exactly what it is.
