starter won't dissengage

Postby rickmcdaniel » Wed May 22, 2013 11:24 am

I have a 1999 GL1500. Having a problem with the starter not dissengaging. Here is what happens. Took the bike for a ride, stopped and got gas. Bike started fine. Rode a couple of miles further and made a second stop. This time I used reverse to back into a parking spot. After about 30 minutes restarted the bike and that was when the starter kept running. Shut the bike off with the kill switch and the starter still kept running. Turned the ignition completely off and the starter was still running with the bike completely shut off. Restarted the bike and headed home hopeing to make it before bike quit. About 10 miles later the starter finally dissengaged. This is the second time this happened. The first time found out I had a bad alternator and weak battery and didn't make it home that time. Didn't realize it was the starter that time. Alternator and Battery have both been replaced. Thanks for any help.

A starter that won't stop running is getting power from somewhere....The starter solenoid(switch).
It is possible that it stuck or the contacts welded stuck....Either way,for piece of mind replace them.

Starter relay A....to the right of the battery.

That was my thought. Thanks for confirming. Only question is you said them. Is there another one besides the one you mention?

There are 2 solenoids, yes, generally when one is bad I suggest replacing both due to age....
However when looking over the schematic, the "A" solenoid is the only one that could have 'stuck'.
You could play it safe for no more than they cost,to replace both.
If "A" solenoid stuck,it would keep "B" solenoid energized also through the reverse switch.
Follow the dotted line....

For cranking the engine, both solenoids are energized...For reverse only "A" solenoid is used...

Keep us up to date on how it goes.

I've only seen the insides of a couple of gl1100 solenoids that failed...The copper disk and contact studs looked like they had welding tracks all over them and much of the material was splattered all over the insides...It would be interesting to see what yours look like. :geek:

If that happens again when riding, the solenoidgetting stuck, remove your right side panel and expose the battery. The solenoid is just to the upper right of the battery..use a pocket knife (or somethingelse) and give it a sharp tap. That will break the connection and stop the started motor. Happens to mine every now and then..after 194000 miles I replace the solenoid and just yesterday it did it again with the new solenoid. Sharp rap to the solenoid fixed it again!!
