Fuel gauge/ water temperature gauge doesn't work?

Postby stevet50 » Thu May 23, 2013 8:39 pm

I have a 1993 GoldWing Aspencade. All of a sudden my gas gauge and water temperature gauge don't work?
I checked all the fuses and they are fine? Not really sure which one covers these gauges but all are fine.
Can anyone help me checkout and fix my problem?

The gauges on the 4 cylinder hondas run off of a 7 volt regulator. That is a common failure with these bikes as they are about 30+ years old. Lots of aftermarket parts to replace the 7 volt regulator but if I'm not mistaken our board manager here sells a really nice one. Sorry I don't remember the url but someone will be along soon with that info or you can just search on 7 volt regulator.

That's all well and true (and you can click "Store" at the top to buy one) - but being that the original question is about a 94 GL1500, which does not use a 7 volt regulator, it's not going to apply here.

Looking at the GL1500 schematic, there are a few common points for power to be lost to both of those gauges. Let's check two things:

When you turn the switch to ON, does the oil pressure light turn on?

Shift to fifth gear. Does the OD light come on?

If both those lights still work, but still the two gauges don't work, then your problem is most likely with C108, a white 6-pin connector located behind the dash. There is a black wire with a brown stripe that is connected through that connector, and it supplies +12V to the two gauges.

Along with your temp and fuel gauges..are the running lights out..(trunk and saddle bag lights if you have them)? If so check your relay for the group. Behind the left saddlebag, near the fuses is the relay grouping ... check Relay #3 to see if it is loose or dirty..that could also be a culprit..

After much swearing at getting to the relay box and getting it open, all was well. I traced my problem to a pinched and split wire way back under the top trunk. Once spliced and taped everything works fine. Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
