Your opening post fails to mention any specifics to your ailment. So, I'm obligated to ask:
is your reverse lever in the down position?
Keep the rubber side down.

The cable/switch on the reverse lever may be broken or stretched?? take the lever off and look to see if you are getting any motion at the switch..if teh issue can be resolved there you've got much bigger issues..in the tranny..probably???

Have you tried moveing the reverse lever up and down with some force while rocking/rolling the bike a little??
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83

Maybe this is a little late but I had my '96 GL1500 SE w/ 2004 Lehman Conversion on a slight incline and I was unable to get out of reverse. I had to shut the bike down and push it forward to get pressure off the starter drive and then get the bike out of reverse.
