Cylinder filling with gas

Post by ace_trane » Wed May 29, 2013 6:41 am

I have a 88 GL1500, the problem I'm having is gas filling cylinders. One thing I notice is that if it is kept in the garage it does happen, but if it is outside I can smell gas and a couple of cylinders fill with gas. Any ideas on what is going on?

I also have a 88......
Now if this was a 1200,I'd say you left the gas on and a float stuck overflowing the carb..But...this is a 1500...Hmmmm
First the gas smell....I also had that...the auto fuel shutoff valve, just in front of the gas cap,was dripping....Just a little and evaporating(the smell)....I didn't see any gas till I lifted the valve from the mount. The weep hole is in the bottom.

If your valve is bad,and there's pressure in the tank(normal),and you have a sticking float....It can lead to your problem...
So first, inspect the fuel valve and repair as necessary... the mean time...when you shut off the bike, open the fuel door and loosen the gas cap to relieve any pressure there....Secure it back when riding....
After you find/fix the leak, run some Sea Foam in the system to try to clean the floats and needles up.

First and foremost is leaking float valves either damaged or improper float heights and should never leak under normal conditions. 2nd area is the back up auto fuel valve which should prevent this from even occurring. You got two problems that need correcting.

Some guys replace fuel pump with aftermarket, hopefully a fuel injected or high psi pump is not in use in your ride. Normal pump fuel pressure is 2psi +/- one half psi.
