REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF VENTS ON GL1500I

Postby BUBBACAYMAN » Wed May 29, 2013 7:32 pm

Well I have the new chrome replacement vents and lower heat vents for my 1993 GL1500I, but am running into some trouble accessing the rear of the vents. So anyone got a video or step by step pictures and instructions on how best to take off the minimum number of panels and remove the old vents and heat vents. Not the top vents in the fairing, just the lower and heat vents.

Try this, I used this instruction for the subfilters to pull off all fairing pieces (which also gets to the vent system and vents).

Granted, it takes you to one side of the bike, but the other side is the same ;)

I'm not sure if this will help but I've removed the "vent" without removing any covers...
Standard disclaimers apply....2 small screwdrivers and 3 hands....Lift 2 retaining tabs just a little...pry gently the bottom out just a little....Same procedure for the top....Mine came straight out....

That would be a lot easier than taking the whole bike apart ;)

ALL DONE, AND I HAD TO REMOVE ALL THE PANELS TO INSTALL PROPERLY.

The middle vents, right just pop out and pop in the new, but the lower vents where the heat comes out, I had to have access to the vent itself to align the small lever bar that actually closes off the vent.

I had done the left side without removing the panels, but realized the vent would not close all the way, so hey had nothing better to do today than learn more about my bike, by taking it down to the frame, well almost anyway.

Thanks for the advices, but wingman's total removal for the filters is about what I had to do,,, wish I had had the replacement filters while I had it torn down... Oh Well next time. :D

The filters are just foam - you can cut some out of a piece of foam (foam paint brush would work) if you don't have any on hand.

I misaligned the lowers too.I ended up using a screwdriver and opening the flapper a bit to get the control arm to slide in the slot.
