Can't remove drive shaft from final drive on '88

Postby amsoilguy » Thu May 30, 2013 10:15 pm

Since I'm replacing tires I decided to service the final drive and shaft. I pulled the final drive and shaft out but I can't remove the shaft from the drive. It has a very slight amount of play in and out but I can't get it past something hard. I removed the rubber seal with no difference. What am I doing wrong?

There is a retainer ring or spring clip that is on the end of the shaft which causes spring pressure when trying to remove the shaft. It will come off but you have to use some pressure. There is nothing in there that you can harm by using a lot of pressure while rocking the shaft back and forth and pulling outward. When re-installing you can leave the round spring clip off.

Over the grass or over a soft landing, grab the drive shaft and lift the rear end by it (shaft up, drive down), and lift as high as you can, and drop the end and before it hits the ground, yank upwards on the drive shaft. The momenton of the drive should forces the drive shaft out of the hub.

I worked and pulled and finally got it out. Thanks everyone for your suggestions...and my back is still ok! :D

Waiting on a new set of O-rings and a new brake rotor and I can start assembly.
