Reverse/Forward Gear problem

Postby AJW » Tue Jun 11, 2013 4:20 pm

Good Day All, I just heard about this site fram a rider passing through my small town.

Last fall I had my 91 GL1500 in reverse on a incline with a passinger on. When I attempted to di-engage reverse it was kinda hard to do. I rocked the bike and was able to put the reverse lever down and put the bike into 1st gear. I got about 100m than the gears started to make a bad gridding sound. I but the bike into neutral and parked. When I re-atarted the bike in neutral all sounded fine but if you put it into 1st, 2nd, etc, it grids loudly. Also when I engage my reverse lever and push the starter button the bike will not move backwards, it feels like it is trying to grab but it wont move.

I have the service manual and this is my 2nd Wing but first one with reverse.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks AJ

I have seen other posts about this I think you will need to look on the right side of your bike, for the cables that hook up to the lever it sounds like you will need to tighten them up. Do a search in the search bar for any posts about this problem.------Hal

I belive that Halbudd is right , check the cables. After rebuilding my starter reverse didn;t work as it should ...check manual for spects. Hope gear is not hurt.

No wood not make the forward gears grind...BUT if not fully disingauged you could be hearing the reverse gear.

Thanks Guys,

I had the cable off already and tried to move the reverse lever by hand. I was a little worried with that grindding sound but never thought of the reverse gear making that sound. I will try to adjust the cables and see what happens....I have nothing to lose..:)

First I want to welcome you to the forum. Its always good to see another Canuck around here. I am the guy that you met at the gas station when I was passing through your town. I see that the responses you have received from the knowledgeable group that likes to hang out here all point to the same thing we discussed at that time. Please keep us updated on your progress and let us know what you find the problem to be. Hope to hear that you are back on the road soon. 8-)
