Final Drive Leak

Postby omegarecs » Sun Jun 23, 2013 6:01 pm

Well today I was just detailing the bike and as I got to the back wheel I noticed alot of oil on the rim and a little on the tire it was comming out of the square hole in the final drive dust cover at the bottom. It has never done this before I clean the bike from front to back 1 to 2x every couple weeks just so I know what is going on and if thier is any new leaks. I took the bike in to Honda for what they called a safty check and it got a clean bill of health then and its been fine, have not been riding alot maybe 5-6X very short distances anyway any ideas on what I am looking at.? Is or was it over filled and would that cause it to leak or are the Seals bad and I need to take out a second morgage. Any help would be awesome thanks to all and GodBless. P.S. I have not checked the Final drive oil yet that is next.

UPDATE: Ok I checked the Final drive oil and it was at the correct level. The minute I removed the screw a small stream started. So could it be possible that it is over full???? What do you think.

If it is running out it is overfull. Let the oil run out until it stops draining.

I just want to add, make sure you're checking at the correct place. The smaller screw near the bottom of the gearbox is the drain. Always check the level with the bike on the center stand and remove the larger, upper cap. The oil just be just up to that opening.

I know, learn to proofread before posting....

The oil should be just up to the threads.

Ok I checked the taking out the big plug at the top and the oil comes out in a very small stream. I took the bike to Honda and they stated that it was one of two things. #1 is the grease they put on the spline #2 is the seal leaking. So he told me to ride it around for a few days and then dont clean the oil off and bring it back to him and he will see what kind of oil it is. Seal is a $170.00 fix.
