High Mileage?

Postby mg31059 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 7:40 pm

Looking at a 1989 GL1500 with over 170,000 miles. I know Goldwings will go forever but wanting an opinion on this bike. Has a lot of extras, looks good and is supposed to be in excellent condition. The auction price is starting at $2500. Does anyody have an opinion on this?

Two riders my way with high miles, 1 @ 240k and the other @ 280k. Both are 88's and run and sound as solid as my 89 with less than 75k. Well maintained they run a long time.

That's probably why it's starting so low. I see 4 on CL, 88 and 89 1500's all for $4400 and up. I have been looking around to move up and if yours was in REALLY good shape I would go for it, but with both eyes wide open. :?

I'd be surprised if it actually sells for under $4k. You never know, you might stumble on the right seller at the right time and get a really good deal. Loan value on my '94 is still $5500, and clean bikes in the early 90's will easily sell for $6k to $8k with 150k miles or less. These bikes will easily go 300k miles plus if maintained. I personally know of a '93se and a '96 aspencade that have over 200k right now and still run as good as new, and just as good as mine which just now has hit 100k.

Unless you are in the business of buying and selling vehicles and can offset a loser with other sales or are a mechanic that can do all your own repairs, buying from an auction is a risky undertaking on the word of some guy who may know nothing, that all is well.

Ignorance is bliss.
