97 GL1500 with CSC trike..front tire buzzz?

Postby vv0350 » Fri Jul 12, 2013 1:29 pm

Last year, we put a Michelin Pilot Activ 130/70-18, M/C 63H on the front of our trike as suggested by many other trike riders....to get higher mileage off the front trike tire...
We are wondering if the buzz that we hear at 35mph and slightly at 55 mph (and nowhere else) can be result of running this tire on the front...we run it going the mfg specified direction, not backward as some suggest.. :?:

So, DISCOVERED the ANSWER to the mystery buzzzz...!!!
Went to the local Honda shop to have a new Universal Joint installed...challenged the mechanic to figure out the buzz (as he had previously thrown his hands up in the air over the buzz.)
He put the trike on the rack and within 60 seconds came bursting out to the waiting area with news..told me to follow him back into "surgery". Now remember, we had a Pilot Activ on the front of the trike...a normally rear tire...with STRONG side walls...
Anyway, he put a tire gage on the valve and it read 8 pounds...tire LOOKED fine..but 8 pounds is basically flat..them strong side walls made it look pretty much normal..
The signature of the flat tire was causing the buzz...
He then inflated it to 50 pounds and squirted water and soap all around both sides of the rim...then told me to study closely all around both sides...after a few moments, I began to notice tiny, tiny bubbles coming from dozens of places on both sides...
The mechanic then explained that the rear Pilot Activ tire didn't have the same bead shape as my front rim..and this kind of really slow leak was common with the (1500's) front wheel installation...he said he had pulled off a number of Activ's and put back standard front GW tires..problems solved..he stated that if I was content to live with a very, very slow front tire leak, that I could go ahead and run the Activ until it was worn down and ready to change...no way, did not wish to live with a very slow leak on my front trike tire period...so it came off.. End of story...

Interesting. Also a good reminder to check your tire pressures regularly.
"It´s a friggen motorcycle, it´s not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you s**t your pants every now and then. "

Yep, check your tire pressure on a periodic basis...I checked ours about 3 times a year and prior to any trip over 200 miles..BUT, with this rear tire to the front set up......weekly checks are advised...

I wonder if putting nitrogen in the front wheel would slow this process down?
