Neutral light

Postby RHHarrison » Tue Jul 23, 2013 8:12 am

I am having an issue with the neutral light, so much so that I have had to mount a pushbutton switch to even get it the Bike started. Occasionally the light will come on and all is fine, but then I notice it will flicker or will slowly go dim, then out completely. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. 1994 1500SE

With the schematic, locate the plug in the front of the bike that feeds the gear selector switch.
Locate the neutral wire.Turn on the key and see if you can get the light to go out when its still in neutral.Wiggle and twist on the plug suspecting a bad connection and see if the light comes back on.
If it dosen't,use a piece of wire and short the neutral wire to ground. If it lights back up,the switch is bad.
The switch is burried behind the front engine cover.
If you can still crank the engine when the light flickers out, your problem should be in the dash.If it won't crank, its the switch.

I have replaced the reverse/ neutral switch and can now consistently start the Bike in normal fashion, but still no Neutral Light which is bugging the crap out of me. I have so many parts off the
Bike now, that I would like to get this resolved also. I have ordered main, sub and cruise air filters that I will replace since I'm tore down that far. I do not have a schematic that I can read to
find the plug that feeds the gear selector switch. Spent a couple of hours looking for last night with no luck. Also, while I had the bike running on its center stand last night, I dropped the side stand and the engine stopped. I am confident the Bike is in Neutral, as the rear tire was not spinning, so it sounds like I have something else going on here besides no neutral light.
Any Suggustions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

I go to the schematic. The bike thinks its in gear.put the kick stand down in gear and its suppose to kill the engine.
I'll post again soon.
Right now,it cranks in neutral(no light) and has a new gear selector switch, not the neutral switch on the right side of the engine, right? There different.

In the "manuals"section,download...Honda Goldwing GL1500 1994 Service Manual-730CB.pdf
Goto page 456...It's the schematic....
The Power for the neutral lamp is supplied by the reverse lever switch...I have seen them bad...It will kill the lamp...Check for volts as the lever is operated. It switches from one wire to the other. One wire is 12 volts with the key on.

Here's the basic start schematic...No lamps are shown

Does the reverse lamp light when the lever is moved?
Just verifying the switch has power..

One thing at a time...get the lamp working...Here's the location and the voltage path for the lamp.
Can you go with this information.?
