Low fuel sensor calibration

Postby cal3san » Sun Jul 28, 2013 2:35 pm

On a trip out west last month my 1500 ran out of gas even though gauge showed I had 1/4 tank left ("mileage" said I should of had at least 60 miles left on the tank). Honda dealer said it was low fuel sensor and it would take 4 days to get one. Opted to continue trip and use 140 mile refill method.

Got home and had local m/c shop replace sensor. First reading with existing gas left in tank was spot on. First FULL refill it took while to register full and as I rode more miles the gauge hardly moved but when it did I had 140 miles on tank. Next tank ended up showing RED at 176 miles and needle was barely registering HALF-FULL. Next tank was registering FULL when I ran out of gas at 145 miles. Thankfully I had my spare gallon of gas with me. At gas station took 4.5 gallons to top off.

I want to know is how does one get the sensor to "read right" or calibrate it?

Incidentally , did 4K miles using the 140 mile refill method on the trip which took me through TN, KY, MO, AR, NE, IA, IL, OH, KY (again) AND WV.

Nice trip..... That's not out west! Ha!!!!! I would make a quick guess that the new fuel sensor you had installed is bad. So, I would take it back to the place that installed it and let him deal with it,.

Anything west of Coastal Carolina is "out west" to me. But I did live in San Diego in the 70s and 80s.
Going to take it back to Tim tomorrow but thought someone had some insight on the subject

I live in Nevada City, CA., but am in NE Washington State now. Doing a little 6 state tour on my new (to me) GW 1500. California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
Could be a wiring issue with the sensor as well. Since its so inconsistent, it almost sounds like a ground issue.

If the light is coming on the low fuel sensor is working. Your fuel gauge sending unit isn't registering correctly which is a separate problem.
