1989 GL1500 Headlight & Gauges not working

Postby Prowlercat » Mon Aug 12, 2013 9:23 pm

I had removed and reinstalled the fuel pump on my 1989 Goldwing and by accident grounded a hot wire. Now the bike starts and runs fine and the horn, turn signals, brake lights, radio & CB work fine. The headlight, running lights, neutral light, kickstand light, kickstand kill switch, fuel gauge & temperature gauge does not work. Yes I've checked all the fuses & relays. Any ideas are welcomed.

Ok sparky, where was the wire that shorted.
I'll look ASAP for a common line and post again

Here's the basic schematic...I know that you looked at the fuses and relays but test for volts on both sides of #8 fuse...It feeds the switch side of relay #3...This relay should click with the key turned on and it provides power to the circuits that don't work...If the fuse has volts, swap the relay with another of the same type....The white wire feed to the fuse must be OK as it has ignition..same feed wire.

Checked #8 fuse them swapped #3 Relay now it blows #8 fuse as soon as the ignition is turned on. Looks like the brown wire with the blue tracer is grounding out somewhere!!

Ouch.thats a pretty large circuit path.
I would suggest you retrace your last steps. It sounds like you either pinched a wire or connected the pump feed wire to the ground blade.
If that's where you worked,I'd unplug everything there and retest.
Just because it starts dosen't mean the pump is running.

I'm wrong...the ignition coil power also feeds the fuel pump relay..No spark no fuel ....

"brown wire with the blue tracer " I've searched the schematic...I can't seem to find this wire...Can you describe it's location.??
I also assume when you swapped the relay and it blew the fuse that the original relay is also bad.Keep it seperate.

Brown wire/Blue tracer is coming off Relay#3 and becomes hot when the relay is energized. I removed the instrument panel and it still blows #8 fuse. Definitely there is a dead short in this wire, just got to locate it. To clarify a jumper wire had been installed by the previous owner that went from the fuse box and was wrapped around the fuel pump hot wire. This wire was grounded by accident and started my problems.

Ok.that helps .Ill get back into the schematic.
Did it get the wire hot? As in melt the casing at all.
I'd hate to think that the wire melted inside the harness and shorted somewhere inside.
Not common but in your PO wiring its possible

Do not see any signs of melting. I ordered a electrical troubleshooting manual from Helms, hope it arrives today!

Found the other end of the wire...It connects to the reverse switch...The one next to the lever. It can be unplugged to see if its shorted from there back to the relay or from the switch on...

The switch probably won't be bad but unplugging it will give you the direction of the short.

Located the short between the switch and the plug into the wiring harness. Looks good now. Thanks for your help!
