97 aspencade will not keep running

Postby kralph » Mon Aug 19, 2013 8:38 pm

My 1997 Aspencade will start and run as long as the choke is in just the right spot. If I move it up or down the bike dies. When I use the throttle to keep it running as soon as I let go of the throttle it dies. Can start it right back up but will not keep running unless the choke is in just the right spot or use the throttle. Can anybody help?

I guess the first thing I'd be asking is when it's running, does it fire on all 6 cylinders?
Start it from cold and run it for 5-10 seconds...Lightly tap the right headers compared to the left...
One side cold would indicate a dead carb.....
Using the "choke" ,which is a fuel enricher valve, just adds a bit more fuel than the idle circuit...
My 88 was cold on the left side...I opened the carb drain screw and blew compressed air into the joined vent tube(in front of the gas cap) and got a lot of water and gunk out of the bowl...This stuff completely plugged the left carb...Obviously the bike would not run either...

Yes both sides are warm. The bike runs good when it's running, just won't keep running when I let off of the throttle. When it stops running it is instant no hesitation.

If it will run down the road the main jets are open....
No idle without the "choke" is the slow speed jets plugged in both carbs.

Before you delve deep into the Bowles of the bike, drain both bowls and use compressed air in the vent tube.It may just blow out what's in there.
I put a cup under the drain tube to see what came out of mine.
It's a small tube on the right side of the bike.Getting to the drain screws is 'fun'
