There's not that much that it could be...
the drive gear in the front wheel, the cable, or the speedometer. If it's not the first 2 then it must be the 3rd thing.

Just to rule all engine noises out, find an empty, straight, flat open road, get up to the speed where you hear the noise, shift to neutral, and hit the kill switch to kill the engine.

On my speedometer i have had a stuck bearing at the incoming connection. This gave the cable a lot of resistance and made it scream (high vibration sound).
After greasing the bearing of the speedo the problem was over.

I don't know for the goldwing, but lots of bikes run plain bearings in the speedo and these eventually dry out. Usually turning the speedo upside down, pouring in some light oil where tghe cable attatches and leave it for 24 hours to soak in will cure the squealing problem.. Certainly worth trying before you get more serious about replacing/dismantling the speedo.

I had the same problem on my '99 Wing and was told to put some lithium grease on the inside of the speedometer cable. I took the inside of the cable out and put a thin film of white lithium grease down the entire length. It squeeked & vibrated a couple of time after that, but then it stopped. No problem since and that's been at least 5000 mils ago. Good Luck & god bless!!! Mike in Brownwood, Tx

For speedometer cables, I like to use dry graphite lubricant, especially for cables where you can't remove the inside. Just put the tube from the spray can in the top of the cable, and spray until it drips out the bottom. Turn the inside a few times to make sure it's distributed evenly, and let it dry for a few minutes.

Sounds like you need to discover if it's the cable squealing or the actual speedo unit and then apply the appropriate fix!! Or just do both and be happy..
