reverse

Postby ldhardee » Tue Sep 03, 2013 7:21 pm

I have a 1995 GL 1500. When I put it in reverse it only moves about a foot and stops. I can push the start button again and it wiil move another foot. It will keep doing this every time I push the start button.

The troubleshooting steps for the reverse system are quite lengthy and involved. Here's where you can start:

Is the reverse light lit.

Put it on the center stand and try reverse again with tire off ground, any different.

I own a 1990 GL 1500; so figure my ignorance but isn't that how it's suppose to work? At least that's how mine functions. Starter drives the reverse gearing.

Definitely not. The bike should continue moving as long as you hold down the start button. It should not move a short ways and stop on its own.

Yes thats what mine does; but the OP said it moves when he pushes the starter button. I took that as he IS NOT holding it in.

The light is lit, and it does the same thing when up on the center stand with the back wheel off the ground.

Unfortunately the reverse is the most complex elec system on the bike.

Good news is that your R light stays lit when it drops out so the system is not seeing a fault and is most likely due to a poor wire connection or relay/regulator fault. 65A fuse under seat can be problematic and can only suggest you start there.

Does it stop moving while you are still holding the starter button on? (I'm still unclear if it only stops moving when you let the button go)

Mine reverses when I hold the button but stops moving when I let the button go- as I believe it should.

I'm not familiar with the Goldwing system specifically, but it is perhaps a relay overheating and cutting out, then works again when you push the starter button until it overheats and cuts out again.

The reverse system is a complex system of mechanical gears, electric motor, and electronic controls. It monitors the speed and current draw of the motor, and adjusts the power to keep the bike moving at a constant slow speed, regardless of the incline. If part of this control system is malfunctioning, it shuts down immediately after you start, which I suspect is what the original poster is experiencing.

97 Aspencade Trike, stop bike, transmission in N, no passenger, no obstacles in path, don't clutch, engine idling, pull Reverse Lever out and up see R on dash. Press Start button.
