How hot should the alternator get?

Postby jocoflyer » Wed Sep 04, 2013 7:28 am

I just reinstalled the alternator and took it for a test drive. All seems to be working fine. I have one more quesstion though. How hot should the alternator feel while it is running. After a short drive I left the bike running to check voltage and just take a look at the finished job. But I noticed the alternator was hotter then I would have thought it would be. Too hot to keep my fingers on it. It that normal? The bearings seem fine and are not making any noise, the unit is putting out voltage. All seems to be working I was just surprised by the temp. Any thoughts.
Thanks JC

I don't have a clue...Next time I'm out mucking around town,I'll stick the IR thermometer down there.
I suspect it should be close to the block temp tho...somewhere round 160*...Well,it is tucked in there pretty tight, not like my truck....hanging out in the air flow....It even gets pretty warm too.

It gets too hot to hold. It's bolted right to the engine and it's behind it not getting any cool air. I tried changing one right after turning off the engine, that was a mistake.

Thanks for the reply. I guess mine is doing what its supposed to do. I was just surprised at the high temp.
