Front tire on GL1500 Trike

Postby rlwfarrier » Fri Sep 06, 2013 3:51 pm

I am fixing to install a new tire on the front of my GL1500 Trike. I am going to mount a back tire of the same size as the GL1500 front tire and have been told that I need to mount the tire backwards - opposite from the rotation arrow. I have been given a plausible explanation for mounting the tire this way, but am still not convinced that the tire should be mounted backwards. Can anyone give me some information about the proper direction in which to mount this tire. Thank you in advance for your time.

When a tire is on the rear, the majority of the stress is under acceleration, so the tire is designed to provide the most traction when it is encountering resistance against it being turned by the engine.

When that tire is put on the front, the majority of the stress is under braking - there is no acceleration turning the wheel, and the majority of braking power is on the front wheel. In order to have it provide the most braking traction, it needs to be put on backwards, because that's the way it was designed to provide the maximum traction.

Think about it this way - when it's on the back, and you accelerate, which direction on the wheel is it trying to scrub the rubber off? When you put it on the front, you want it to try to scrub the rubber off in the same direction, except now it is when under braking - which means you need to put the tire on backwards.

That is the best explanation for this that I have ever read.
