cb quit transmitting

Postby Freewheelin96 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 7:39 pm

Hello all, i have been trying to search the forum for a problem like mine, but unfortunately you can not search for 2 letter words, so looking up CB problems is difficult. Any who, my 94 SE has a problem transmitting. It started last year. Wouldn't transmit all the time. Found if i push the button twice it would work most of the time. Not the switch itself because it would do the same thing when toggling with passenger switch. Thinking it might be a power supply connection or ground problem. I have taken the CB out and clean the connections there and also on the radio. Don't know where else to look. Could it be the unit itself. Last few times I rode it, I couldn't get it to transmit at all. Receives fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I know on my 1100, if the antenna was not correctly connected (i.e. dirty connector), it would do exactly this. I don't know if the same thing applies to the 1500, but it's worth a look. The antenna connector is accessible if you remove the left fairing pocket (four screws).

WingAdmin- interesting you should say that about your 1100; mine has EXACTLY that same problem! Receives like nobodies business, but no transmit.....

I will chase down all the connections now. I was just getting ready to send the unit off to Sierra Electronics for test/repair.....

Thanks!

Looks like we have 2 thread here and will try to answer both.
On the 1500 need to know whether it is showing TX indication every time you use the PTT or does it show the TX intermittently?? If it shows TX every time you use the PTT then more than likely a mic input problem to the CB. If the TX indication is intermittent then more than likely a wiring problem from the PTT to the CB.

On the 1100 the same answer applies as the 1500 but also need to know if it shows TX display on channel 40 and not on 1 then it has a problem internally in the CB.
If you need a little more info give Jeff a call here at Sierra 937-335-8939 and he can offer more support.

Wayne-
I have no TX light (tried Ch 1 and Ch 19). I removed/cleaned/reassembled the PTT switch - no change.I have NOT, however, gone thru all the connectections from antenna to unit.

Antenna will have nothing to do with TX not indicating. It is either wiring from PTT control or CB is broke.

Wayne, I had bad capacitors in the CB on my 1100. As it got worse and worse (or temperature got hotter), it got extremely picky about the antenna connection - and SWR. If the connection wasn't pristine, or even if someone was too close to the antenna hitting the PTT would mute the audio as expected, but no carrier and no TX indication on the display. Eventually, it wouldn't transmit at all, no matter what I did with the antenna. Replacing the bad capacitors fixed the problem.

I have no idea if the 1500's CB works the same way, I would definitely defer to you guys on that. That said, if the original poster cannot get the CB working, I definitely recommend sending the unit off to Wayne at Sierra - they will fix it and turn it around quickly for a flat fee.

On the 1100 when the tantalum cap goes bad what I mentioned is normally what happens. Most don't check the upper channels as they only use 1 thru 19. The 1500, due to age and the way the double sided boards are stacked the grommets break loose from the boards and end up with breaks in the solder lands.

Interesting, is that GL1500 issue something worthy of preventative disassembly and maintenance? I assume more bumpy roads/hard rides may speed those problems along.

It is just age, heat, cold, and design of the unit with the vertical layout of the boards.
