Starter Short?

Postby weasfx » Mon Sep 09, 2013 8:49 am

Hi, I'm new here, really need some help. My bike runs fine, to & from work, & around town.
But, while idling at red light or stop sign, the starter seems to engage &
drains the electrical system within 2 seconds. I get it home, and charge overnight,
its fine again till "next time" Thanks

There are two relays in charge of engaging the starter - starter relay A is actuated by the starter button, starter relay B is actuated by starter relay A. Both relays are behind the right side cover. If either of these sticks on, it will cause your starter to run continuously. Also check your starter button - if jiggling it around fixes the problem, then it's the switch, not a relay.

What makes you think the starter is engaging and why only at a stop. Even if the starter was running it would not drain the elec system in 2 sec. And if the starter did have a short internally it would be there all the time and is not smart :D enough to now short only at a stop.

Check the charging voltage and battery condition, large connection at alternator and 55A dog bone fuse to the right of battery.
This is what I do
Local and need repair help with your 1500, Valkyrie or ST please PM

Could be it can't be heard unless stopped.
