used engine?

Postby jbeganny » Wed Sep 11, 2013 10:36 pm

Has anyone purchased a used engine from the many that are offered on ebay? Is it just a crapshoot? I am at the point where I either have to tear my engine apart to fix the transmission or buy another engine with a good transmission. How do I know if the tranny is good or not? For that matter, how do I know the engine itself is good? What kind of experience have people had buying used engines? And also, if I have a choice should I buy a newer engine than mine? Will a 99 fit without modification in an 89? Were there fewer transmission problems in the later models? It makes sense to me that Honda improved the tranny as time went on. What is the reality of it?

They upgraded the transmission starting in 1997. I'm not up on the swap.

I would only buy one that they show the motor running and shifting before they took it out. I have seen them for sale showing this and some will give a warranty for the motor some thing like 30 days but not sure I have not been looking for any motors lately.

Starting in 1997 Honda started putting Valkyrie transmissions in the GL1500 Goldwing engine, which were much stronger and more reliable. So I would be looking for a 1997 or later engine. And yes, it's pretty much a crapshoot. If you get the engine and put it in and it works good, then you know you got a good one. :)

On the other hand, if you get the engine and change the oil first, and metal shavings come out with the oil, it's probably not a good one.
