sealing bolt

Postby mothership » Wed Sep 25, 2013 12:11 pm

I scraped one of my sealing bolts on a speed bump and am going to replace it. What is a sealing bolt or what does it do. I know there are about 4 of them on my 1500

They are really 8 sealing bolts, 4 @ 18mm and 4 @ 20mm. See link for locations. Look to be milling access points to me.

What if any damage occurred that would cause you to replace it? Just curious!

When I scraped it I must have put a hairline crack in it and it leaks oil. It doesn't drip on the floor but I do notice about 2-3 drops on my left boot after a full day ride. Probably expands enough to leak when hot and contracts when shut down and cools off.

Oil on the left boot could be indicative of a leaking shifter seal.
Is there any oil on or around the bolt you are talking about?

The sealing bolts are all in wet areas of bike and if one made hard contact and broke the locktite it can work loose and drip. Might need a helping hand to plug hole if bolt is removed. Use teflon tape or other form of thread seal to threads and reinstall. Should be OK.

I bought a new bolt so it shouldn't be a problem. Just was wondering what a sealing bolt does

robb is correct. Drain oil and clean threads inside thoroughly before re-sealing bolt.
