1988 Dash lights staying on

Postby captainkyle » Tue Oct 01, 2013 8:18 am

Hi All, I have a 1988 GL 1500 & when I turn the key off the radio & the temp & fuel gauge lights stay on. The clock also stays on & not sure if it is supposed to . I was wondering if any one else had had this problem & could narrow my search down a little bit. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ill look at the schematic ASAP.
My first guess is a stuck relay.Pull them out one by one.
If the lights go off substitute that relay.
Borrow one from another slot.
If it is a relay, tapping it might release it temporary but it will need to be replaced.

I've reviewed the schematic....by your description, the accessory circuit is still on...
I hope the key is actually turned off and just not left in the ACC position....

The accessory circuit is fed direct from the ignition switch..it could be bad...
BUT FIRST....

Locate the small plug with 2 wires in it on the back of the alternator..inspect it carefully...it can be touching the main power post...If it looks OK,unplug it and see if the clock goes off...

This little wire is also "ignition switched" and if shorted to the main wire or if the alternator has a bad regulator,it can "back feed" into the accessory circuit.....

Thank you very much ! The key is definitely off. I unplugged the two prong plug & it looked good & the clock did not go off when I unplugged it. The alternator was put on right before the bike was parked. It has less than a 1,000 miles on it but I know as well as any one new parts can still be bad to. I worked on a 1200 & was able to dissect the ignition switch & repair it. Will the 1500 switch come apart ? For now I took the accessory fuse out so it wont kill my battery.

Hmmm.can you identify which fuse you removed?Either location or number.
Also is there any add on stuff on the bike.

If this helps to identify what fuse you pulled....
