SEA FOAM

Ok, trying to figure out if Seafoam is good or bad. Some riders are saying they put it in their fuel and in their gas tank. Cleans everything up and they get better gas mileage. I have talked to other people that say Seafoam is not a good idea because when you put it in it does clean up the engine internally, but when it removes the Laquer and stuff that has built up, it cause more problems. Any reponses would be appreiciated. Good or bad and I will make my decision.

It depends on the amount of shellac and glaze on your components. I imagine if your carb and your combustion chamber are badly shellaced, then the particles, if they were to flake off, could plug up carburetor jets, or injectors of FI bikes. I have, however, not heard of Sea Foam causing the shellac to flake, only to disolve bit by bit, so as the Previous Poster stated above - one vote for Sea Foam.

I have, on the other hand, seen other decarbon formulations cause problems, but they were the type that one sprayed into the carburetor until the point of engine stall, several times, with a final application to actually stall the engine, after which one would wait fifteen minutes and start the vehicle again. These spray formulas could cause damage to valve to seat fitment which required disassembly of those components to finish the clean up.

Im all for Seafoam, I have used it for years on all my engines, from the weed eater and lawn mower to the bikes, cars and trucks and have never had a problem only improvements .8-)

I have to also add a +1 vote for Seafoam. I have used it on many different engines and only ever had good results. As mentioned earlier, if you have a severely gummed up engine, it's possible it could dissolve enough lacquer to plug up tiny jet orifices (especially on four-cylinder wing which have microscopic jet orifices).

That said, my GL1100 was particularly susceptible to clogged orifices, simply from the crap they call gasoline around here. Let it sit for more than a month, and the engine was very unhappy about starting and running well. A single dose of Seafoam in the tank quickly fixed it, every time, without fail.

Seafoam - Like a tune up in a can...

I have used it in all my bikes (and mowers, cars, trucks, etc.) for years.
It seems to work and can't hurt so why not...
Seafoam also has some fuel stabilizing properties ; although I use Stabil for winter lay ups...

It helps get rid of moisture from ethanol as well as cleaning up carbs. I use it in my truck and my bike.

I have also heard that it is an excellent mosquito repellant, and weed killer...

Some use it as a firestarter , while others an oil additive...
Comes in a Marine version as well...(Semper Fi)
It might even cure gout, incontinence, and other stomach ailments...?!?! :? :lol:

Talked to my Honda mechanic, he said that it is fine to put it in your gas but not in the oil on a Goldwing, the reason is that the Wing runs off what is called a wet clutch and the components in the wet clutch, in his opinion will not play well with the cleaning properties of Sea-Foam. Just his opinion but he has worked on Hondas for over 20 years.

People have been using Seafoam in bikes for much longer than 20 years.
Below is the response from them about wet clutch use.

Subject: Sea Foam
Sea Foam is a 100% pure blended petroleum oil product, NO CHEMICALS. That is just FYI!
Sea Foam should be used in the fuel in your motorcycle, to clean carbon, add lubrication to the fuel, clean the fuel system, dry moisture and stabilize your fuel for up to 2 years. That would be at one ounce per gallon of fuel.
Now, here's your answer/technical education for today:

Sea Foam is also widely recommended for engine oil crankcases for cleaning oil residues and drying moisture as a pre service cleaner, after service additive or problem solver for oil residue related problems. ALL ENGINES!

If your wet clutch and engine oil share fluids, then Sea Foam Motor Treatment # SF-16 is EXCELLENT for that system. Partly because residue causes problems, but mainly because there may be excessive moisture in a shared system like that.

Moisture is the #1 thing that will deteriorate a "water based adhesive" clutch. That would be a clutch material with a water base glue as it's "Binding" material, similar to what is used in all automatic transmissions, where an oil based adhesive would dissolve in the oil or fluid.

ANY system that uses a "WET" clutch, the clutch material itself is made with and adheres to the steel components using water based adhesives, plus sometimes rivets. Like "SUPER ELMER'S GLUE", but, of course, BETTER QUALITY!

Some wet clutch systems use hydraulic oils/ATF's, in which case Sea Foam TRANS TUNE would be recommended, it is for hydraulic oils, and all the above apply.
