oil leak.

Postby Maddogg » Sun Oct 20, 2013 5:10 pm

Here is a new one on me. I have an oil leak that only happens when I park it. It is only 1 drop after I park. Will not drip again overnight. Only after riding. Could this be a shifter seal or something. Bought the bike about 2 months ago and it did not have the problem. This is recent.

It's possible you have a leak on a seal or O-ring somewhere that only leaks when the bike is operating (i.e. oil pressure present). It can leak drops of oil as you ride, when you shut down, it drips once - but no oil is under pressure anymore, so it stops. If you start it up and it starts dripping again, you know this is it.

Can you tell where it is coming from?

Yes it is coming from a plug at the bottom on the left side of the bike. Has a big allen head.

Another question. In the center left of that picture, there is a hose from the radiator going into a housing. That plug is right at the bottom of that housing, towards the back of the housing. Is that where the thermostat is or is that the water pump? Still Learning my way around the bike.

Also, do you know what size that allen head is? I don't think I have one that large and will have to buy one just for that. Do you know if it is an "O" ring or gasket? Torque? I ask a lot of questions. But I want it to be right.

Yes it is. I can not seem to find out what that bolt/plug does so I am reluctant to remove it.
The leak is just a little more than a weep but it is definitely from from the same place.

I would clean it off (brake cleaner works well), then powder it with talcum powder. This will show exactly where the oil is leaking from.

Yep been there done that. I am sure where it is coming from just leery of removing the bolt/plug before I know what its function is.
