Which is longer? A piece of string or a piece of rope?
Yes the problem could be with the starter or the solenoid, but you will have to do a test to find which is faulty. I would suggest trying to connect a light bulb to the switched side of the solenoid, as this is an intermitent fault, they are the hardest to find. If you attatch a light bulb between negative and the switched solenoid output, then every time you press the starter button the light will come on, this indicates the solenoid is working. Then on the few occasions that it doesn't start see if the bulb is lighting up, if it is then the starter motor is probably at fault, if it doesn't light up then the solenoid is faulty.. I do not know if the solenoid can be diss-assembled and cleaned, but it might be worth looking and seeing. Also a good overhaul of the starter motor would do no harm and might fix the problem. There is a "how to" article on this site about removing the starter motor and giving it a good clean and overhaul.
