1993 GL 1500 LCD dash screen

Postby Bytor.snowdog » Wed Nov 06, 2013 3:13 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site but have owned, rebuilt and road goldwings since 1990.
I own a GL 1500/ 1993. The bike is in pristine shape, but about a month ago
I hit a nasty bump and it somehow blew out the left side of my LCD screen.
I want to keep this bike in like new condition, so I really want to replace that
screen. Does anyone know where I can find one? I've checked on eBay and the Internet,
however no luck. Is it possible to find NOS or would anyone have one they'd like to sell?
Also, will any year GL 1500 screen work on my 93? Are they interchangeable or not?
Thanks guys!

They should be interchangeable...but be prepared for sticker shock...normally $200 and up. If you can find a complete assembly (speedo/tach/LCD/housing) you might be able to piece it out and make back some money....good luck with your search!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You may want to contact a salvage yard for the part.
I checked a couple of parts sites and almost fell off the chair when I saw the prices for the display alone. Yikes!

Thanks for the info everyone. It always amazes me how much Honda charges for their parts. I swear it feels like I'm back on my old Harley, simply because of the price of new Honda parts. I am quite surprised that the LCD display blew out like that. I've never had a screen break like that. If anyone has that part and wishes to sell it, please contact me! I'll also search cycle salvage yards. I really appreciate your help.

I had the same problem, someone already suggested to buy the whole dash as part it out, worked for me.

Be patient, and keep looking on Ebay, I suggest getting the whole dash so you have spare parts.
And do consider an led mod to the lights, there are two just for the lcd screen, one you have to get at by taking the screen up and aside to replace, they sell an led for that, its like a #37 lamp base but led, I bought mine in blue off ebay from Hong Kong, like $4 for two and free shipping.

I am having the same issue on a bike I have a deal going to buy at tax season, dead LCD screen. I checked with my local Honda shop, no longer available ( for a few years now) but when they had them, $650.00 plus tax ! WOW, for a radio read out !

I have found a few on Evil Bay at the $150 mark for screen alone to $200-$350 mark for complete gauge set up. . . .best of luck !

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be possible to just repair the LCD rather than replace it

Keep looking on ebay. I bought one on September 23, 2013 for $340 (used). The seller's handle is al_sgarage001 and I have nothing but great things to say about his service and honesty regarding the condition of the part.

On a separate note, I would recommend replacing all of the instrument panel lights at the same time you replace the screen. I followed WINGADMIN's step by step instructions and it all went smooth. REALLY makes a difference!

On the subject of LED bulbs in dash, did the DIY get corrected or a warning put in about the Blinker lights disabaling the self canceling feature on the bike if going to LED?

Changing the dash lights to LED will not disable the self cancelling feature. The light bulbs in the dash are too small to make a difference (not enough current draw). Changing the front or rear turn signal bulbs to LED will, however, cause this problem, and will then require a load resistor to be installed.

**UPDATE**

I was doing some other work on my bike, and had to remove the stereo and surround, in doing so, I had to unplug my stereo from the bike. When I put everything back together, the dang screen works ! Now when mine was acting up, ONLY the time worked, but now the radio info, suspension info, and clock all work. :D

Those things are ridiculously expensive. The cheapest solution is to use a set of aftermarket ones:

Fred, I don't need the LCDs, but here is a great How-To from WingAdmin that will give you the steps required.
On a side note, you should probably remove your email address. There are lots of nasty bots that search and will get you on all sorts of spam lists.

Hope this helps and thanks for "paying it forward" with the LCDs.

Maybe I'm confused on what you are trying to do then.
The tutorial walks through:
- removing all the item in order to get to the dash (steps 1-19)
- removing all of the dash connections (steps 20-24)
- shows the dash being removed (step 25)
- how to remove the LCD (step 36)

I wish some one made a replacement screen....
All I need of the current one is time and rear pressure.
Would be better if it had a few extra functions......thermometer, maybe even a compass,....etc........
