I , as I am sure others, have problems with memory and remembering where this or that goes on long term projects, so if a project of mine MIGHT take more than hour or two, I take lots of pictures of everything before I remove it, I also keep nuts and bolts and screws in separate bins of some kind , so HOPEFULLY I don't end up with those " extras " when done.

Best of luck with this !

Something I do to keep track of what bolt goes where, particularly when I'm working on something new I haven't done before (or in a while) is to loosely reinstall bolts/nuts back where they came from after a piece is removed. For instance, I would remove a lower guard, then take those bolts and loosely screw them back into place where the guard normally goes. Now I know exactly which bolt goes where, and I don't have to try to remember it days later.
