Battery problem

Postby Kactus59 » Mon Dec 02, 2013 4:16 pm

I am seeking some advice on where to start with my "problem". I have a 98 1500 SE. The battery is at 4 years old. The alternator the same age as battery. After sitting for 2 weeks or more without a trickle charge I end up without enough power to get it to fire, even though it turns over. However just recently I had her battery all juiced up at 100% (according to my charger) and when I turn the key on and hit the starter button, all goes out, headlights, dash lights, everything. I try to "jump" it with the charger hooked up and same thing. I check again to see the charge state of battery and it reads 100%. I remove battery from bike and hook up charge and it reads battery at 15% and charges up to 80% and stops. There seems to be plenty of juice in battery and replacing it back on the bike and turning the key on proves otherwise. Lights are dim but slowly brighten if key stays on for 15 seconds or so. Hit the starter and it goes dark. At first initial turn of the key I get a whirring sound from somewhere under the passenger seat, actually almost sounds as it is coming from the left side saddle bag. I would think that a shorted or dead cell in the battery would not allow any charging. Battery replacement time? mechanic time? Your thoughts and direction are appreciated Thank you.

Take the battery to your local favorite auto store and have it load tested....

Thanks Virgilmobile, I was thinking that I may take it to the bike shop I bought it from and at the same time if it doesn't pass muster I will have to get another. It is the yussa (spelling prob. not correct) maintenance free battery and I would expect that closing in on 4 years that it probably would need the replacement. I have read that the 1500's are hungry for battery power but the ignitions are sturdy so I am hoping that I won't be digging down into the innards! Although there is an inner air filter that supposedly always gets forgotten on the 1500's that I have learned about that needs to get some attention. I can do a little house cleaning then. Thanks.
