1998 goldwing rattle..need help

Postby kezer » Sat Dec 14, 2013 12:05 pm

I have a 98 Goldwing. When i downshift from 3rd down it makes a rattle sound like a loose gear slapping back and forth. It starts in 3rd and gets loader as i downshift. Reverse rattles bad.{ almost like grinding in revers } It rattles even when the cluch is ingaged. But there is no issues during the power take off. And no vibration. It sounds like it is more forward in the engine but hard to tell.

I hope you can appreciate that its a guessing game because I can't hear it or identify its location in text format. This is kinda "hands on".
However you might be able to narrow it down a bit by answering a few questions.
Can you record the noise, upload it so we can hear it.?
Can you point the bike in a steep downhill position or uphill position ( in neutral, engine running) and hear the rattle?
Can you centerstand the bike with the rear wheel off the ground and force it to rattle selecting a few gears?
Have someone with you to locate the noise area?

Perfect. I will record the noise and post. It does not rattle in in neutral. Can you tell me how the reverse works? My gut tells me that it has something to do with that. When it started i could not start the bike with with the clutch pulled in. It must now be in Neutral. If the reverse works off of the starter then the chain might be slapping.

If it has a 3/4 shifting fork problem,it may make no noise at a idle if the bike is on level ground, thus the need to pitch it.
It won't start in gear if the clutch switch is not working.
I don't recall any chains in the start system on the 1500 like the earlier bikes,as I remember,it's all direct gear drive.
There are cable adjustments for the reverse system lever on the right side, perhaps it's not completly locked in or out.Look at a manual and compare it to yours.

Virgil, you have this one. I will let you break the news to him. Why, why, why? Why don't they just correct the problem when it becomes apparent.

If your thinking it's related to the ilder gear....here's a bit more reading from a web search...Some of the gears can be seen by removing the starter

And about the transmission...
http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/2-g ... attle.html
http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/2-g ... l1500.html

Don't forget...the alternator has rubber blocks that couple it to the engine...Should they deteriorate,it will be noisy on the left rear side....
