Two options most likely gear at wheel broken or speedo broken. If the cable is installed correctly try putting a drill on the wheel end.. and see if the speedo responses if it does gear at wheel the issue if not speedo the issue.

Was the cable you took out broken?

I'm betting my money on the drive gear in the wheel housing. Ask me how I know.

You have to take the front wheel off well the axle has to come out so you can remove the gear. But do the check first..pull the cable off the wheel end stick something in the cable's slot..put a drill on it and turn it on see if the speedo responds.

Along with checking the cable you can check the wheel drive mechanism after the cable has been removed at the wheel. You will need to get the front wheel off of the ground.

When you remove the cable at the wheel you will see a flat tab that the cable fits around. You can see it in this picture:

Give the wheel a spin. If that tab doesn't turn then you've got a problem in the wheel. When you are checking this it is also a good practice to put your finger on the end of the tab and give the wheel a turn to check if the tab is turning smoothly.

Inside the speedometer housing on the wheel is a metal gear (that's what the tab is attached to) that is driven by a plastic one when the wheel turns. You can just see a part of it in this picture. It's the white plastic:

I think that this plastic gear is the sacrificial part of the system. I thought my cable had broke 2000 miles from home. Had no luck getting a cable at any Honda dealer I came to so I ordered on online from my local dealer so it would be there when I got home. When I got home I assumed the cable was the culprit and since I now had one, I replaced it. After all it's easier to do this than remove the wheel. A visual check of the tab showed it turned. Took the bike out the and the speedo worked for about 2 miles before the rest of the plastic gear got chewed up. Back tot he dealer for more parts. Replaced the gear and all was good again.

KLSTOCKBRIDGE: If I read your last comment right, then your cruise control and radio volume are working ok. If this is true then it would seem to me that your speedo itself is toast.
