tach not working correctly

Postby a@r » Sat Dec 28, 2013 6:27 pm

Hey guys need a little help. Brother in laws 89 1500 tach reading 2000 at idle and 9000 at 65 mph. I need to know what year model did mother Honda change from a cable driven tach to an ecm electrical tach.

Thanks
Alan

I'm not sure about prior models, but all 1500s have electronic tachometers. You/he might have a dirty or bad wiring connection some place. The service manual from Mother Honda has an entire section on electrical troubleshooting. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Ron. I was basing my question on wingadmins diy article on changing your dash lights to leds. He has a statement in there that some earlier models had a cable driven tach. The biggest thing I cannot fiqure out is it started all of a sudden and he(my brother-in-law) tells me his cruise still works, which means it is getting a signal from somewhere. I will just have to trace it down. The other thing that bothers me is I hear a ticking sound on the right side which somewhat sounds like a speedometer cable on a older car. of course it could be another noise and I am getting ahead of myself

Thanks again
Alan
