Need advice on new helmets w/factory headsets

Postby amsoilguy » Tue Jan 07, 2014 1:16 pm

Forgive me if this has come up before. We are looking to get new modular helmets and wanted any feedback from those who have recently purchased one and was able to fit it with the factory headsets. Will the headsets and mics fit any modular helmet or just certain ones? We have an '88 GL1500 with the original system.

should FIT ANY HELMET just have to cut out holes for the speakers and then attach mic..only issue I have seen is if the mic boom is long enough to reach the chin area from where you have to attach it..take you headsets with you to the helmet store...
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

What kind of helmets are you looking to buy.

I bought a set of Nolans with a Nolan system for them. Work and sound great.

We haven't determined what brand of helmets yet, just the modular type. The Nolans look nice with their system but unfortunately out of our price range, I'm hoping to use our existing system, mics, etc. Thanks for the reference.

Sorry. Misunderstood the question. I thought you were looking to get the com system too.

The Com system should fit into just about any helmet. Some will be a little more complex to install than others.

Last year we bought newer helmets and tried to use our older headsets. We bought the GMX helmets from Sierra Electronics while we were at the Wings Over North Carolina show. We got home and then tried to mount our existing J&M sets in the helmets. I ran into an issue. The headsets mounted up to the helmets but, the speakers were so large, they made your ears sore. We had the older system with the blue speakers that do not detatch and the large blue mic. Since I had already bought and used the helmets, we had to buy newer headsets with the smaller speakers that would mount inside the helmets without giving you sore ears. It seems that with the newer helmets, they fit tighter to your head than the older styles and will not allow the use of the older style headsets. Just be sure when you try on the helmets you show them your headsets and see if they will assist you in checking the system for fit. New headsets are not cheap.

The large earpieces are what made me move from the basic J&M headset to the "elite" version J&M headset for my current helmet. The "elite" earpieces are much slimmer. As a bonus, the sound quality is far better as well.
