Saddlebag side light turn signal wiring help request

Postby 02jmpr » Tue Jan 28, 2014 2:20 pm

Howdy all!

I'm a proud new owner of a 1996 GL1500SE! My first wing!

I plan to install the 6 light saddlebag side light kit straight away amongst a bunch of other lighting updrages, but I would like to know how to make the side lights flash either alternately or with the turn signals. I asked Cyclemax if I could use the same wiring harness they sell to make the trunk sidelights flash but they replied that they were not designed for that. (note they didn't say you couldn't do that) ;)

Can anyone please advise me the best way to wire up the saddle side lights to make them turn signals?

Thanks in advance!

This, I believe, is what you are looking for...

I would recommend however changing to LED strips..over time the incandescent bulbs will melt the plastic!!

Changed all my trunk and saddlebag light to LED strips...big difference!

Yup, that's the harness I was questioning but was told it was not designed for the saddlebags just the trunk. Will it work anyway? How would it get wired in?

They shouldn't melt the plastic right? The saddlebag side lights were designed to be on all the time as running lights. I just want them to blink with the turn signal circuit

That harness will extend to the turn signal connectors..just plug and play...YES over time the incandescent bulbs CAN melt the plastic...it may take a while..but it will happen. You will have to remove the bottom plate of the trunk to install the harness..not hard..just be patient with the panel..don't want to snap any tabs..You can do a similar connection the amber side lights on the Wing also..just need the bulb harness and the flasher harness

Thanks for the reply!

Still, there must be a way. I've seen YouTube vids of those side lights blinking happily. :)

On the saddlebag or trunk side lights, I used both and they are LED I segregated the leads so I knew which were +positive and -negative. I had just recently installed the front TS alternate flash wire kit and I wanted the same for the rear, so I made my own.
take the positive (+)wire from the side lights and connect to the running light circuit, take the NEGATIVE and connect to the TS feed (+) to the lamp of the upper trunk light bar, thats the AMBER TS lamp socket. Do not use any ground wire or wire to frame.
When the key is on the side lights will light up as usual, but when you activate the TS left or right (you have to do both sides) the side marker lamps turn off when the TS lamp flashes on, its about reverse polarity and reverse current flow, especially works well with an LED light as they are polarity sensitive, they will not light up when backwards.

Mine work just fine and I did not have to buy any additional cable, harness or plug set. Could have done the same on the front, yeah I know forums have sponsors but sometimes we the owners just cannot afford every single trick piece of equipment. As long as you get past the requirement of NOT connecting a ground wire it makes sense as you are completing the circuit path by going through the current flow of the TS lamp. Old Chevy PU trucks had that circuit many years ago on the front TS and side marker lights.

It's seriously that simple? Wow! That's why I come here! Thanks for the answer. I will probably still buy the harness for the front fairing and the trunk side lights because they're only a few dollars and plug-n-play.
I assume wiring to the TS with no ground is not a problem or dangerous in any way with incandescent bulbs is it?

Thanks again. I appreciate.

It looks so much better when you mod the front and rear marker lights with the red smd strips.
Leds will promote longer alternator life by a lesser load.
Plenty of members during the winter do this, you can buy them already done but its more fun diy.

I would prefer led but didn't want to do the mod until the factory bulbs in the light kit went out. Where can you buy saddlebag side and fairing side lights that come as LEDs?

They are not available to purchase as already made up...you will have to do the mod yourself....

I would think that this is a easy fix. Use the adapter for the trunk lights and run to the saddlebag light's. Cyclemax have plugs that can make this a plug in set up. Remember that the saddlebag are a lot lower (as in line of sight) and harder to see even if flashing you may wish to put trunk and saddlebag's lights in a parallel set up.
