Just sitting around

Postby doxbike » Sat Feb 01, 2014 11:19 pm

I got a new hip in December and am afraid of testing it with the weight of the 1500 or even my Triumph Tiger 800XC, so I bought a Piaggio MP3 500- great little scoot-it ain't your daddy's Vespa- to keep me occupied till I could get back on the big bikes.

I hook up the battery tender between the two bikes, start and let them run on the center stands for 10 minutes every 2 weeks. I added Seafoam to the gas to stabilize it. Anything else I should do to keep them in running condition till the hip heals?

As to the motorcycles, just let them sit with stabilizer in the fuel and the Battery Tender on them until you are ready to ride. It will most likely do more harm than good to start them and let them sit. It is best just to let them sit as long as you have stabilizer in the fuel.

As to your hip, I would think that it would have healed good enough by now but I don't know your situation. I had a hip replacement on Dec 7 of 2011 and was riding by January 1, 2012. Either I had a GREAT doctor or an excellent recovery due to daily physical therapy. The therapy was probably what did it though. Every day, three times a day I was exercising that leg.

Good luck with your recovery.

Thanks Mike.
My PT was going well-therapist said I was at the 6 weeks level by 2 ½ weeks. So, thinking I'd become invincible again, I upped the game and got a groin pull! :? so had to back off for awhile.

I have no doubt I could ride the big bikes, but I doubt I want to hold them up if necessary and I've dropped them both before.

Well, you COULD bring the Wing to me in Oklahoma City, I promise to ride it often and keep it ready for you ! Lol

Seriously, just add stabilizer to the fuel and let them nap until you are ready to ride, they will be fine. As for the hip and groin. . . Take it easy and listen to your PT therapist , heal up right and then join us on the road.
Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself. Our stress about it happens when the two aren't the same. Be true to yourself and to hell with what everyone else thinks!

I was wondering who'd be the first with that response

I got this special "recipe" from a Goldwing site and it keeps my bike running great year-round:
"To 5 gallons of gas add 2 oz. of StaBil + 2 oz. of Sea Foam + 2 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil."
"When shutting down for a couple months double the proportion of StaBil"

This has worked well in all my Wings, carbureted or injected.

Best Wishes to you.

Sounds like I won't have an issue with what I've done-only a month or so left before I'm back on the big bikes again. I just heard so many horror stories about the bike just sitting around and varnishing up, leading to very costly/time consuming re-hab.

With my Gl1200s, I could tell after 2 weeks of not riding, they were already starting to have a little accumulation of deposits in the carburetors. It seems to be much better with the mix of StaBil, Sea Foam and Marvel Mystery oil. I had my carbs off 7 times on my Goldwing so I found it better to use a good mix and try to run my engine every couple of weeks.
My 1500 does seem to act up a little after 2 weeks but is better with the mix of chems.

LOL Doc, I know you've been sitting in the man-cave sippen MM and revving the engine's on the wing and tiger. That Super Scoot can really haul the mail. Hope all goes well Sunday in Bel-AYR, take it easy on the Trumpet.

Why you not going to Bel-Ayr or Yuma?
I'm gonna air out the Triumph today, take the scoot tomorrow and the wing to Yuma

Yuma is a possibility, Ill find out tonight. You didn't tell these good folks you rode 200+ miles on the Super Scoot just a few weeks after the installation of the Bionic Hip.

Saw that before-woulda been better if he'd used the 500 like mine-it would have really been HILARIOUS at 100mph+

That Piaggio MP3 500 sure looks like it would be a fun bike to add to the stable...
May deserve further investigation :D
