Postby mdel747 » Mon Feb 17, 2014 10:33 pm

Broke the side stand bracket on a GL1500 1988
is it better to just weld it back on
or what is the best way to fix this ,
or how hard is it to replace the sub frame section
I can seem to find it in my Clymer book

thanks guys in advance

Weld it? I would try if I knew the welder; knew they did good work. Cost? I'd bet it's close to what you can buy a used one for on ebay ~ $45

There's some work there alright to remove the current one and replace with a new one.

A new OE looks to be ~$170.

How did it break, by the way?

Good luck.

I Bought it up in St Cloud Mn on Saturday ,
first bike in a long wile , the guys up there were Harley guys
so i let them say how the bike should be loaded on the trailer and tied down ,
But i insisted on a lot of straps and that saved it from going over , at least
As i had only had light bikes in the past and you cant toss a strap on the handle bars on the wing ,

I had it strapped well as she never went over , but it was a long drive back down 94 in the snow and ice that came in , 10.5 hour drive for only 400 miles stopping to check straps often
but didn't see anything with the stand until i grabbed a hold of it wondering why it was off the floor ,
I know i should of researched how to trailer a wing , and i did have that Hmm moment when they put it on the side stand , but figured they knew more then i did , about this ,

as some one already said ( in the hello im new section ) not the first guy to have one break on a trailer this way ,

Is there something to show how to install the sub frame bar and whats involved ?
Edit ; I bought it , might as well do it right , now to find out how to ,

Oh, the trailer issue - you're not the first and won't be the last. Bummer.

I've torn several down and rebuilt a few. I have to go look up to see if my Clymers has the specific instructions.

I'll suggest you need to remove all of the lower fairing/ guards and exhaust systems - look that up in your Clymers.

Also, look in your engine removal section. Might have the sub-frame mentioned or at least exposed.
