"New" Wing!!!

My "New" Wing!!!
My "New" Wing!!!
Some time next week I will take delivery of a Red 1999 Anniversary GL1500. The bike is on consignment with a reputable bike shop in Newport News VA. The original owner became too ill to ride. For just a tad under $6000.00 I'm getting a well kept bike with just a tad over 50K on the odometer.

Yep, we love the VR. I bought it from a friend. It had 29K and change on the odo. He tore up the muscle in his right leg and couldn't ride it, and at the time Voyager didn't have a kit for it, so he bought a Yamaha RSTD with a kit. I got the bike for 3K. It needed front springs, the carbs were out of whack, and some of the plastic was cracked.

We tried riding it, but the front end sagged so much I couldn't put the kickstand down with her on the back (she's on the "healthy" side... ;-) ), so she took 5K and bought a Voyager kit. Henry was pissed, 'cause the RSTD didn't ride the same as the VR does.

After we got the Voyager installed I rebuilt the front struts, wired in some tail lights, replaced the stock antenna with a Fire Stick, wired a 12 volt outlet in the trunk, changed the clutch, rebuilt the brake calipers, master cylinders, and air suspension system.

The major problem with the VR is Henry is mechanically challenged and the things he neglected are starting to cause issues that are going to be expensive and time consuming to resolve, so as soon as I get the Wing, the VR goes up for sale.

Here she is from the back....

Here she is torn down for the front end work...

Here's a shot before the rebuild... Notice the front end sag....

I bought mine new off the showroom floor...I finally sold it with over 100,000 on the odo and traded it for the 96 Wing I currently have. After 100,000 miles I was noticing the clutch slipping and had replaced the clutch plates but was still having issues...Years later I discovered what the real issue was....I had been using synthetic oil on the Venture for the last 25000 to 30000 miles and apparently the Venture does not like synthetic oil!! Wish I had know that before I traded her in...it was a great bike!! I now have over 200,000 on my Wing and it is running strong!!

I have an 89 Venture Royale myself, I love the bike, its NOT a Goldwing, its something to me a bit sportier and actually more advanced, and yes it can be a bear to troubleshoot the CLASS air suspension, but I found out all it took was a few places on the motherboard that needed fresh solder and it works great now. And then I have the 95 Aspencade, the wing handles power on a grander scale as it has a real alternator, the passenger has more room on the Wing but the Venture feels more nimble, I would travel anywhere with either one.
But the Venture is the one I like to ride the most when I am alone, the Wing for when I have a passenger.

The Venture is a bike I cannot sell, first because I like it so much, secondly there is a poor market for it because it was outdone by the Gl1500.

I constantly try to post in forums that Yamaha should bring back a modernized Venture Royale like the older ones, but no they went more cruiser.

I use synthetic Rotella in my Venture with no problems.

I hear ya. I really like the VR, and had it not been misused and neglected I have no doubt that I would keep it. However, maintaining 3 bikes on a fixed income is not an option, so sadly, the VR will be joining my Sportster on Craig's List.

Have you looked a Royal Star Venture? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_Royal_Star_Venture It may not have the VR/GL style faring and body panels, but I hear they are an excellent ride....

When I started looking for a bike to replace my VR, I started looking at RSVs. I found a white one with tan seats (OMG was she pretty....) for $7K, but someone snagged it first... Then the pickings got pretty slim around here, so I started looking at Wings. I was really surprised to learn I could get a slightly older GL-1500 with all the goodies, for about the same price (and in some cases cheaper) that I would pay for an early to mid-2000 RSV.

FWIW, I stayed away from the GL-1800s for two reasons: They cost more that I can afford, and I don't like the way they look...Especially in yellow...

Back around 02 I was still driving my 85 Aspy, but was in love with the looks of the Midnight Venture.Buddy and I went and did a demo ride Yamaha was putting on to ride one.The wife was with me and neither one of us liked it although it was very comfortable for her.I couldn't wait to get off of it and back on my old 1200.Told my local Yammie Dealer(bought my smowmobile off of him)that I wouldn't trade my 1200 for the Venture even if it was a straitup trade.Just wasn't for me.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

Yup, I had a Venture also (amazing how many of us there are), bought it off the local bike shop for $800, it had 85k miles on it. It was a bulky stiff thing to me, since it was my first touring rig (was riding vtwins before), but I ran it all over. It was way to easy to get up to 80+ mph with out noticing. Only issue I had was that my legs were just a little long for it, so I always got cramps in my knees and hips due to the angle. When I got rid of it (after an accident and sold for more than I bought it for, go figure) I went to Goldwings....way to easy to get up to 90 mph with out noticing and no cramps....I was sold. Nice Venture though, lotsa guts to that bike.

The one thing I don't like about the VR is (for me at least) there is no where to put highway pegs. The bike had some aftermarket (Markum?) footrests mounted on the engine guards, but I could gumby my legs enough to get comfortable. I considered floorboards, but they appear to have been made in very limited quantities our of a material called unobtainium.

I actually kinda like sitting on my VR more so than the GL1500, you sit in a more traditional wedge seat position behind the false tank, oh and my size 12 boots can shift very easy, the Wing its a little bit more confined getting that big foot aligned. I remember the first time in the shop after I bought the 89 VR I asked my lady friend to hop on back, as soon as she climbed aboard while I was steadying bike astraddle it promptly just collapsed and keeled right over. Its the CLASS air suspension, it dumped all the air or had a leak, anyway as soon as some weight got on it it just drooped on down at the nose like a drunk elephant. Very common problem on the Venture Royales after time for the CLASS to just go into error mode, but its an easy fix if you can solder.

I found that the motherboard solder points would actually come apart over time and a fresh pass over some connections made it right as rain, I actually would love to have the same setup on my 1500 as you can pre-select 3 level settings front and rear or manually adjust individually front and rear, being able to adjust the front was really nice, much more complicated than any Goldwing. But if you have any air leaks or a bad CLASS you would just bottom out the suspension.

I still have my 89 VR and the 83 Venture standard, goal is to fully restore both, the 89 is in great shape though I noticed some fluids have leaked while its been in storage this winter. The 83 needs to get its body back on.

Congratulations on the purchase of a fine Wing.
I bought my 1993 Aspencade with 32,000 miles on it in the Fall of 2012, (traded 2- 1200 Goldwings and a Ninja 250 to get it).
I have been very happy with the smoothness and quietness of the 1500 at Highway speeds.
I like this Wing better than any one I've ever had, INCLUDING the 2001 GL1800 that I owned for 11 months. I was SO ready to get off that bike after a couple hours of riding...My feet don't burn on the 1500 and it just seems to be a very well sorted out machine.
I added my California Sidecar FSIII to my bike and now, I have the perfect setup, (almost ;)
Just need 4½ degree raked triple trees, 90 Amp Alternator, Darkside tires,
new Pearl HotRod Yellow paint job, better windshield, etc... but it's almost perfect... :D
My fiance and I both LOVE our rig and all the fun times we enjoy riding together.
She even drove it a few times around a couple parking lots, (A WINGER in training).

Best wishes to you on all your rides and enjoy this journey of owning a Wing.

Man, I sure hope so. We try to ride at least once in every month, and normally we ride every day, but this winter has been tough, so we're behind the curve, and I'm jonesing something fierce.

As John Lenon said, "Life is what happens when you've made other plans."

The last couple of weeks have been a royal pain. The weather has been miserable, but we did have one good day so we took the VR out for what will most likely be her final ride.

Yesterday I ordered the Voyager hardware kit for the Wing, so the change over could start over the weekend. I have new timing belts ready, and I need to get and oil filter, oil, and coolant. In the mean time I need to go through the handle bar controls and free up a couple of switches.

After I get the Wing sorted out I need to replace the starter in the VR and then she goes up for sale... We're gonna miss her....
