1990 aspencade tires

Postby 702scottc » Wed Mar 05, 2014 9:43 am

Just picked up a 1990 Aspencade, runs great but needs tires. Looking at some websites and it looks like radials are available for these tire sizes. Any opinions on radials? I've never owned a bike that had them so I'm not sure how much better they are than bias. Also, any recommendations on tire manufacturer's that won't break the bank?

There is only one topic that generates more responses than a tire question and that is an oil question. Both of these have been discussed many many times.

Please use the SEARCH feature, you will have hours of material to read on the subject. The SEARCH feature is there for getting a quick answer to many common questions. Please take the time to do a little research for yourself instead of asking the same question that may have been asked last week or a month ago. 8-)

A quick answer would be stay with bias ply since that is what was on the Wing originally..I'm not a tire expert... But I believe that the 1500 was designed for bias ply. I have used Dunlop, Bridgestone and Metzler's on my Wing(96SE)...never tried radial tires. Of the three brands, I was least impressed with the Bridgestone's...they gave me the worst mileage. Dunlop E3's are what I normally run. Again...you may get a lot of replies about this...be prepared! :D

Stay away from radials! I needed new tires & got a great price on what turned out to be radials. On my '90 it was like riding on black ice. Handling was horrible. Bit the bullet & got E3 bias; rides like a dream. Just my 2 cents.

Bias only on the 1500. I have Avon Venoms. 6k miles and so far they have proven to be a great tire. A couple of negatives on the Dunlop E3s. They are very noisy and get steadily worse as they tend to cup with age. However they are arguably the highest mileage tire there is. I went through 2 sets but I pulled the last set early because of the cupping and noise.

I heard that there is a "new" version of the E3's that are supposed to be less noisy...time will tell...need to try the Avons...heard good things about them...
