Bunkhouse trailer-bushtec pin hitch conversion?

Postby hondageorge » Sun Mar 16, 2014 9:07 pm

recently purchased a 97 GL1500 SE along with a Bushtec pin hitch made for a 1500.
(Bushtec pin hitch for GL1500 - product code 944115) I have a '91 Bunkhouse trailer I'd like to tow with my GL 1500. Since the Bunkhouse has a 1 7/8 inch ball hitch, is there any 1500 Goldwing owners who have converted or replaced their pin with a ball replacement hitch to tow a Bunkhouse. Was it a purchased hitch end or did someone fabricate it locally? I did see that Bushtec sells a swivel pin hitch for over $150 that may work. I'd prefer just a ball end.
Surprisingly, Bunkhouse doesn't offer either ball hitches or conversion for GL 1500 "welded in" pin hitches and even cautions against trying to convert it. This leaves me to believe that the GL 1500 pin hitch is only strong enough to support the lighter & smaller Bushtec utility trailer and not the heavier Bunkhouse camper trailer. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

I pull a 1988 Bunkhouse with my 96SE and it had the standard 1 7/8 ball receiver hitch...not sure about the Bushtech pin set up...if it ain't broke...don't fix it!

Seems to me it would be easier to convert the hitch to a standard ball instead of the pin system.

I don't know what type hitch is on your Wing but if it was made by Bushtec, since they own Bunkhouse, they probably have an adapter to go to a standard ball hitch. This is their website: http://www.bushtec.com/

Yes I do believe you could have a local person fabricate a piece similar to what you have without the pin but with a ball to work on your Wing. Might be cheapest way to go.

Can use a round coupler on trailer and standard ball.

Several friends with front cooler trailers for their 1500's have 50-75 pounds on tongue with no problems. I have a 2nd hand hidden hitch, not installed yet that was used to pull a twin axle popup camper. It was at 45 pounds empty and near 90 on tongue when loaded and his 88 GL1500 never had a problem towing for more than 100k of the 300k on bike.
