where does it go ?

Postby Uncle Fester » Mon Mar 31, 2014 5:20 pm

took the bike out today for about a 100 mile ride. The weather was near 80* out, and as I got near the bottom of the tank, the bike was getting real sluggish below 2000 rpm. Just to give it a try, while stopped at a red light, I opened the fuel tank (got a big whoosh) and dang if she didn't run better !
I assunme the hose coming off the fuel cap (mine is red cloth covered) is some k8nd of breather hose, so my question is, where does the other end go to? I wanna make sure it is not clogged up, and the best way I know is to remove it, blow it out and replace it.

The fuel tank is designed to hold a slight pressure and nothing abnormal about a release of fuel vapors when cap opened.
This is what I do
Local and need repair help with your 1500, Valkyrie or ST please PM

So was the noise he heard, fuel vapor coming out of the tank (pressurized tank), or air rushing into the tank (Vacuum)? I suspect as he states, the breather is blocked and he's bike was suffering from fuel starvation, but I am not familiar with the 1500 so cannot suggest where the breather hose goes or what it's connected to.. Hopefully someone can.

Has happened again, opening the cap for a second and instant return of power. This loss is most noticable in first gear below 2000 rpm. . . .

The hose is meant to let gas overflow if it expands in the heat. The gas cap has a one-way valve in it that is supposed to allow air into the tank to take up the space of the gas that is being removed. If the gas cap gets clogged, no air can get into the tank, so as the fuel pump pumps gas out, it builds up a vacuum inside the tank. Eventually the vacuum is so strong that the pump can't overcome it, and the engine dies of fuel starvation. Opening the cap lets air back into the tank and everything works fine again, until the next time.

Take the cap off and soak it overnight in some Seafoam or carburetor dip. That often fixes the problem.
