Howdy! New guy here...

Postby Mh434 » Tue Apr 01, 2014 1:52 pm

Hi folks! Just bought a "Pearl Glacier White" 1997 GL1500SE a few days ago. For the past 15 years or so I've been riding my Kawasaki ZG1000 Concours, but my wife keeps reminding me of the comfort she used to enjoy on our old GL1100 many moons ago. Plus, my buddy who also had a Concours has gotten out of motorcycling entirely, so the only folks I ride with all ride touring bikes, and my wife figures I'm also past my hairy-chested, canyon-carving days, so...

I live just outside Victoria, BC Canada, and used (and affordable) Wings are very hard to find. After a couple of months of searching, a '97 SE suddenly popped up on our local online buy 'n sell. The bike looked amazing, the price was very reasonable, mileage quite low, and, strangely, the name of the contact person seemed familiar. As it happens, it was an old buddy of mine - a great guy, who now has a GL1800 (among other bikes!), so the 1500 was extraneous to his needs. It was a great transaction, and he even delivered the bike to me (20 km away, on a rainy day!) in a covered trailer. Of course, we did the deal the day before my wife & I left for Las Vegas, so today I'm going out to the shop to clean & polish it for the first time...and see what new chrome bits it can't live without!

Anyway, this site was recommended to me, and it looks excellent! I'm sure I'll have lots of questions, and as I learn, I'll try to contribute worthwhile things that I discover myself along the way.

Welcome to the site. WingAdmin owns it lock stock and barrel, and makes us all welcome. It is a great site, with a bunch of great members.

Oh, incidentally, I got a sister lives out your way, just outside Victoria.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Well, already came across my first problem (accidentally pushed the hazard light button, and it stuck on!), and, thanks to this forum, I found a solution.

It never occurred to me to spritz in some lubricant until I read it here. Initially, I figured I'd have to disassemble the whole housing! As it happens, I had a spray can of silicone "in stock", so I sprayed it into the switch housing, and the button slowly came back out by itself. A couple of push-on/push-off cycles, and it clicks smooth & free, working perfectly.

Success...already!!! :D :D :D

Thanks, folks!

Picked up my 98 SE last September, pearl White with gray accents and gold trim. Found the Wing with only 20,000 miles on it (which is nothing for a Wing). Wasn't sure I wanted a white Wing but quickly changed my thinking the more I looked at it, and now I am totally loving it. Have numerous compliments on it and it does turn heads from people on the sidewalks.

Welcome to the Wing family, this site is great and you find answers to any and all questions about your Wing on here.

I wanted white or that seafoam green color, I'm glad I got the white. It's sharp looking! Just not as easy to keep clean...

First and foremost, WELCOME to the site from Oklahoma City Oklahoma !

A solid white 'Wing was my second choice , but by stroke of luck I found my dream color ( solid blue ) at a time when I had the money, and the price was more than right in my case thanks to a great friend.

You will find all the help and then some here, that I promise.
